This circa 1980s Dana Point home had good forms (perhaps a bit to complex for my taste), and a very a dated look, was desperately in need of a contemporary update/ simplification. The design goals were to simply the existing exterior while blending wood, steel, water and glass textures into a cohesive statement. I particularly like the use of contrasting materials in this project. We’re using rather traditional materials in a modern application. The two big examples are plaster walls and wood siding. Plaster is to be a smooth trowled finish, modern detailing and reveals. Wood siding will be most likely cementitous panel, integral dark color, and applied using a “rain screen” installation.
Here is a fly-thru video of the schematic project design.
