In Greek mythology, Nyx was the goddess of the night. Nyx stood near the beginning of time and represented the start of something grand. Nyx is also one of Matthew Hofmann’s most innovative mobile design/builds – arguably the most impressive one yet.
After creating hundreds of mobile spaces through his firm Hofmann Architecture (aka HofArc), Matthew has leveraged his best small space mobile design strategies into this traditional “square box” RV utilizing the chassis and shell of a 2015 Dutchman Kodiak 32’.
HofArc’s reputation is deeply embedded in aluminum Airstreams. So, the idea of renovating a “square box” RV may seem odd at first. Yet, the motivation behind Nyx was born by the notion that its curious creator wanted to learn more about a typical RV, and the result is anything but typical.
“Nyx has some very, very cool features,” explained Matthew. “There’s a separate bedroom in front with a massive skylight over the queen bed for stargazing. There’s something magical about falling asleep while watching shooting stars.”
The rest of the space’s interior features an open concept kitchen, dining and living area.
For the better part of 2015, Nyx was Matthew’s home-on-the-go while exploring America’s back roads with his fiancé Joanna Krenich. Not surprisingly, Joanna has her own list of preferred amenities.
“I wasn’t sure about living in a trailer for six months,” said Joanna with a grin, “but I quickly realized how comfortable ‘roughing it’ could be with a washer/dryer, spacious bathroom, and plenty of hot water showers. I also like the large refrigerator and tons of storage.”
For off-grid creature comforts, Hofmann added solar panels and converter/ controller system. Entertainment upgrades include a big screen TV and integrated audio system that accepts all ports for handheld devices. The vessel is tech-ready with Bluetooth, hardwired WiFi and USB charging ports throughout the unit. For all-weather comfort, he installed two air conditioners that are ducted throughout the rooms, and a cozy fireplace/heater.
Outside, the exterior has been repainted a stealth black. The road worthiness has been enhanced with four new RV rated tires, an extended storage rack on back, and ladder to access an exterior storage box on top.
After coming back home, Nyx was inspected thoroughly by a certified RV shop where it received its 1-year checkup.
“Quite frankly,” added Matthew, “Nyx is one of the most well-equipped and fully-integrated trailers I’ve created to date.” A statement like that coming from HofArc’s founder, is saying a lot.
